FASE – The Foundational Application of Social Engineering Training Course

By May 10, 2023August 17th, 2025No Comments

As the foremost leader on the subject of social engineering, Social-Engineer, LLC (SECOM) provides one-of-a-kind trainings that learners of all skill levels can benefit from. A purveyor of five unique classes, SECOM recommends the Foundational Application of Social Engineering (FASE) as a starting point. Previously known as Advanced Practical Social Engineering (APSE), this class focuses on the aspects of human decision making, and why it is important to understand those mechanisms. Then, it helps you utilize that newfound knowledge in your life. This specialized course immerses you in the world of social engineering using proven methods to ensure the material stays with you.

What a Day in FASE Looks Like

Each day is filled with in-class lectures and practical exercises. Live exercises in the evening provide opportunities to hone and perfect the skills taught in class. The next day starts off with a debrief of the previous evening’s events to pinpoint learning moments. The next two days follow the same pattern. The final day has a debrief but no live exercises that night. This class is led by the author of five of the bestselling books about social engineering, Chris Hadnagy, and one of SECOM’s certified, experienced co-trainers.

FASE

Who is FASE Right For?

In short, FASE is right for anyone that is looking to learn, and improve upon their, communication skills. We have had everyone from managers, salespeople, adversary simulators, to parents and instructors, attend in an effort to learn about social engineering and how to use it in their day-to-day lives. Here is what some of them had to say about this course:

Dragos Ionica, Manager at Cyber Risk Advisory at Deloitte, Romania

“The APSE course was designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of social engineering techniques, tools, and methodologies. It went beyond the theoretical aspects, offering hands-on experience in real-world scenarios, which I found particularly engaging. This practical approach, combined with expert guidance from experienced instructors (Chris Hadnagy, Rosa Rowles, and Shelby Dacko), truly enriched my learning experience.

Throughout the course, we tackled various aspects of social engineering, including phishing, pretexting, elicitation, and psychological manipulation. The curriculum was well-structured, ensuring that we gained a solid foundation before moving on to more advanced techniques. The course material was up-to-date, reflecting the latest trends and challenges faced by cybersecurity professionals.”

Daniel Isler, Project Manager at DreamLab Technologies

“I have just completed the #APSE for the second time… Many times I am asked where to start in the world of Social Engineering and it would be logical to answer that they should take this course, but in reality it is a course that I dare say is much more useful for people who need to relate better with their family, establish effective interactions in the workplace, strengthen a sales team or simply change the life of someone in the street to listen to him and allow at least one moment of his life to feel that someone cares… Thanks to Chris’ teachings I have been able to consolidate a SE unit of excellence.”

Brian Phillips, VP, Information Security for Macy’s Inc.

“The class provided practical insight into people’s thought processes, communication styles, and overall relationships with others. These are all crucial components of leadership and benefits you both in your professional and personal life.”

Woman vs Machine
Technology is providing new, more innovative ways to enhance our world. Scientists are constantly developing smarter, faster and more intelligent machines, systems and robots. There is no doubt that each of these has evolved beyond their clockwork origins.

Vishing and Phishing Must Be Ongoing to Be Effective
Most companies have a security awareness program in one form or another. If they don’t, it should be on the short list of programs to start as soon as possible. In our experience, many of these programs take the form of computer-based training.

A Case Study in Vishing
Vishing (voice-based phishing) has been a problem for quite a long time. There are many vendors in the marketplace that offer vishing services. However they tend to use robo-callers or call centers for large volume engagements. If they are using trained humans to make calls, it is likely in very low numbers.

Benefits of a Social-Engineering Risk Assessment Engagement
Your company is important. Indeed, the data you hold for your clients or employees is very valuable and attackers seek to capitalize on that data any way they can. This is where a Social Engineering Risk Assessment (SERA) engagement can help uncover possible vulnerability to attackers.

The Business Value of the Social-Engineer Phishing Service
Cybercriminals are targeting the human element of organizations. Additionally, they are developing techniques to use an organization’s employees as the first point of entry. According to the 2021 Verizon DBIR report, of the 3,841 security breaches reported using social engineering, phishing was the key vector for over 80% of them.
